M. Schnoepf

In 2002 begun a spanish-german joint project of the Fundacion
Canaria Orotava por la Historia de la Ciencia and the Berlin based
Max-Planck-Institut for the History of Science. A goal of this project
was to build up an open digital research library for the documentation
of european scientific voyages to the Canary Islands in the 18th and
19th century. Up to now more than 40 books were scanned and put online
for the scientific community. Databases for imaged retrieval and
bibliographic data were set up. The digitized sources contain works
from Alexander von Humboldt, Leopold von Buch, Bory de Saint-Vincent,
Phillip Barker Webb and Sabine Berthelot, and some manuscripts of
Charles Lyell besides many more. Hebaria were digitized and thus formed
a new source for the study of the history of biology. The science
fields range from astronomy, biology, cultural studies, physics and
many more. Thus the concentration on this small archipelago meant to
broaden the different science fields. In this paper I want to give an
overview on the technical background and an overview of the scientific
content of this project.
