Computerised heritage inventories are a powerful tool both for
management purposes and for the transfer of new information to the
public. In the case of Old Montréal, the development of a web-based
heritage inventory has also stimulated research and created a flagship
tool along which other heritage information can be added.
The powerful database-driven site can manage diverse content while
providing tools which are easy to use for the public. The Old Montréal
heritage inventories have successfully reached their original traget
audience and have broadened their appeal to a large public. Since 1998,
when the site was launched, a solid ressource is available to
disseminate information about Old Montréal for local residents, for the
media, for guides, and for the general public.
