The Demographic Data Base in Umeå, Sweden, provides historical data from parish registers and parish statistics for researchers from both Sweden and other countries. The primary materials computerized by the Demographic Data Base consist of entries on individuals in 19th-century parish registers. A distinguishing characteristic for the material is its wealth of detail and high quality.
In order to carry out demographic analyses at individual and group levels, a method of linking individual records into biographies from parish registers has been developed by DDB.
This paper discusses;
* The population database
Includes a general description of the database POPUM, some details about the parish registers and their longitudinal characteristics, individuals and family data (relationships).
* Parish linkage
A brief exposition of the DDB method, including computerized record linkage, manual linkage, controls for inconsistencies etc.
* Region linkage
DDB is currently developing methods for regional linkage. The motive is presented and the differences between intra- and interparish linkage is discussed.
* Specific features
How to deal with contradictory information, territorial changes of parishes, periods of presence, overlaps, time gaps, illogical migration events.
The Region linkage system will as an extension to the parish linkage system increase the quality of the material and the number of complete individual life biographies available for longitudinal studies.
