The Archive founded in 1728, now it has a status of the scientific research institution in the Academy’s system. Including a branch in St. Petersburg, it maintains more than 1600 funds, 920266 units of documents storage for the period of 1725 – 1991. These are the documents of the steering structures of the Academy of Science, the scientific research institutions of Moscow and St. Petersburg, private funds of the prominent Russian scientists (over 527 funds). Separate private funds including papers beginning with 16th century. Funds of the Archive contain a lot of autographs of the great scientists of many countries of the world from I.Kepler to A. Einstein.
The unique documents of the academicals archives stay till now unknown to a wide circle of researches especially the foreigners.
For solving of many problems connected with protection of papers, creation of modern scientific information structure, extension of archive documents using in the Archive within the framework of Perspective complex program of the Archive development is being created the special Program of computing. The works for filling with the databases of funds of Communist Academy (existed in 1920-1930s) are in progress. Creation of databases with documents of Historical section of the Academy and perspective subjects of receiving documents for archiving are working up. Digitalization of documents spends during the exhibition preparation. St. Petersburg branch of the Archive during many years takes part in an international project of creation of databases of watermarks (filigrees).
There is a large volume of graphic papers (drawings, draughts, and photographs) in Archive funds. On its base together with the Institute for information transmission problems of the Academy the Archive carries out a work for creation of text-graphic databases of history of Russian fundamental science. Among them - funds of Presidents of the Soviet Academy of Science – A.P. Alexandrov (600 records), M.V. Keldish (555 records).
The work for digitalization of gallery of the pictures of Russian and foreign scientists of previous centuries – so called Musin-Pushkin collection (over 760 records) continues. The whole number of scientific problems was solved including a special complex of methods which permits to reveal information peculiarities half-tone effigy (image) (the diagnostics important indications) and to lead the task of analysis of difficult exits (scene) to estimation of the value of these indications.
The works which are carrying out in the Archive in general allow to the scientists who are interested in to obtain an access to the huge information resources, to little known papers exposing the interesting pages of Russian history and foreign science as well.
